The legend of the Eclipse
Legend has it that a long time ago the earth was a young beautiful girl and the sun and moon were two young friends in love with her. Both wanted to marry her and asked her to choose for between them. The diplomatic earth liked both equally and so suggested a contest to decide who would be her husband. The clever and smart sun suggested a race across the mountains and rivers and back to the finish line. The brave and simple moon agreed. The day of the race arrived and people turned up in large numbers to see who would marry the beautiful earth. The moon quickly raced ahead, confident that he would reach the finish line before the sun. By the time he reached the river, the sun, who had slowed down, was far behind. The moon jumped in quickly and began crossing the river. But as it progressed, its fire seemed to grow dim. Yet he raced ahead leaving the sun far behind. Soon he reached the waiting earth. By now, the moon had lost its shine. It looked dark and tired, the fire within it all but extinguished. Seeing him the earth got angry. She had always wanted a handsome, bright husband and so she rejected the moon and instead married the sun. And so to this day, the earth continues to revolve around her husband the sun and the moon continues to revolve around his unrequited love, the earth. Sometimes, when the upset moon cannot bear the pain of his loss anymore, he comes between the earth and the sun and tries to win earth back. And every now and then, the earth tries to mediate peace between the two old friends and comes between the sun and the moon.
